Wakaminenga National Congress Hastings, Heretaunga 23, 24 August 2025

Wakaminenga Maori Government welcomes all those rangatira and leaders currently leading the development of wakaminenga in their local area or those who take a leading role in upholding our constitution of He Wakaputanga. We also welcome business owners who operate under the jurisdiction of He Wakaputanga and those who are contemplating doing so. Tangata matatakitaki, observers are most welcome to attend the proceedings of the Wakaminenga National Congress.

Heretaunga area in which Hastings is located is the haukainga or home of Tino Rangatira, Te Hapuku who held much mana in Tairawhiti, the East Coast. He made many visits to the Pewhairangi the Bay of Islands and on one of those visits in 1838 he signed He Wakaputanga. His exploits in conflicts with other tribes are well known. He also encouraged the spread of Pai Marire, a new Maori Christian faith that grew out of the colonial land wars in Taranaki in the early 1860s. It was lead by Maori prophet, Te Ua Haumene and was based on goodness and peace. Te Hapuku was also behind the Repudiation movement of the 1870s that aimed to overturn unjust land sales, he died in May 1879, (Te Ara, Nga Tangata Taumata Rau, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography). We mihi to and acknowledge the Hapuku whanau who remain to this day, stalwarts of He Wakaputanga.

Please email admin@govt.maori.nz as soon as possible to advise the days you will be attending.
